"One of a Kind" by Susan Werby

Once upon a time there was a little girl whose mother started knitting for the very first time and never finished the little girl’s sweater. So the little girl, only eight years old, begged her mother to teach her how to knit and she finished it herself.  And so it began many, many years ago…

Her first sweater now created, she excitedly pulled it on over her tumble of curls until, one day, she discovered that her arms had grown too long and her body too large! “What ever shall I do,” she cried. Contemplative and analytical as she was, she studied her little sweater and told her mother that she would merely cut it up the middle and make it fit again. “But how”, her mother asked.  The little girl, all rosy-cheeked with excitement, screamed delightfully, “By crocheting (yes, she now knew how to crochet) a different color of wool on the cuffs and on the cut middle and all around!”

Despite her mother’s cries of “that is impossible because it will all unravel”, she stomped her stubborn feet and did it anyhow. She now had her very own “Chanel” sweater…

This is my fairy tale with its many chapters. After many mittens and caps, booties and bags, sweaters in all different stitches and sizes and colors, plus so many afghans that I cannot remember, I started creating simple scarves. The scarves may appear simple at first, until you touch one, shake it, study it closely and realize that each is truly “One of a Kind.”

My scarves are knit fiber art, with my artsy approach of playing with multiple fibers of feathery wisps and ribbons and nubby yarns, creating something special just for you! The result is always different but each scarf will always contain the additional touch of colorful beads carefully incorporated towards one end of the scarf. To me, the beads are a way to capture the brightness and happiness of Life… with their little bursts of surprise and sunshine- hidden treasures that just might bring out the child in you!

I invite you to wear my scarf for warmth or as a bit of panache, making a fashion statement that livens up a plain top or dress. Get an attitude and strut like a peacock.
